Project Details
Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club first opened in Dubai, U.A.E. in 1993 comprising an 18-hole par 71 championship golf coarse with a distinctively sail-shaped clubhouse. It was home to the first golf academy in the Middle East. It is situated in the heart of the city, on the Deira side of Dubai Creek.
The Boardwalk Restaurant is located on a timber framed jetty which is supported on 52 vertical timber piles (columns) that are socketed in steel piles embedded in the creek bed. The timber piles are square in section with two sizes; 275mm & 250mm. The piles have a cross bracing system comprising steel wires. As-built drawings indicate that the bottom 1.2m of each timber pile is embedded in concrete. The piles are designed to carry the boardwalk restaurant – open air section.
In 2010 Halcrow and Dutco Balfour Beatty (DBB) completed a detailed inspection of the piles above and underwater. The piles were thoroughly cleaned and then physically examined by divers providing the maximum loss of cross-sectional area in each of the 52 piles examined. The piles that required structural reinforcement and protection and the piles that required protection without structural reinforcement were identified by the consultant’s structural engineers.
Based on the continued success of SeaShield™ Systems on numerous projects throughout the world over the last 50 years, the consultant in 2011 selected the SeaShield 2000FD™ System and SeaShield 400™ System for the long-term protection of all the timber piles for this prestigious project. The protected height provided by our SeaShield Systems was 3.1 meters for all piles. We are pleased to advise that after 10 years’ service the systems are still performing excellently.
