| Is this a record? Only Three Chairmen in 128 Years |
From 1883 until today, we have been headed by only three Chairmen. The founder of the company Paul Winn served 63 years as Chairman from 1883-1946. Following Paul Winn was Frank Coales who served 45 years as Chairman. Frank joined in 1916 and held the position of Chairman from 1946 - 1991, working a staggering 75 years in total. Frank Coales lived until he was 102 and died in 1991. The company’s current Chairman, the founder’s grandson, David Winn OBE who joined The Company in1965, has served over 20 years as chairman and is still going strong. The long service life of our products and systems we manufacture must have rubbed off on them!

| This 20 year celebration happens to coincide with the recent achievement of winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise. The company has gone from strength to strength over the years and it most certainly has something to do with the leadership skills of these three men.
The organisation grew from a small business founded 128 years ago in London. Paul Winn set up the import/export house where the original mainstay of the business was the export of coke to Germany. In 1929 The Company took on the agency for a German tape used for corrosion prevention and general sealing. As a result Winn and Coales (Denso) Ltd became one of the market leaders in the corrosion prevention industry. Today the company has a strong presence worldwide with subsidiaries in the USA, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa and a network of agents across the globe. The company’s anti-corrosion and sealing solutions have been used to protect buried, exposed and submerged steelwork and pipeline in highly corrosive environments for over 80 years. |

Just a Drop in the Ocean for Denso -
40 Years of Worldwide SeaShield Marine Pile Protection and Still Going Strong.
In 2011 Denso SeaShield marine pile
protection systems have now been effectively working in some of the most harsh and demanding environments on the planet for over forty years. This is no small achievement and can now officially rank these systems in the same league as other enduring Denso products, some of which have now been in service for over 80 years.
Anyone who has used Denso products will know we are not in the business of supplying temporary fixes to corrosion prevention problems and pride ourselves on providing long-term, cost effective solutions. The Seashield range of systems have been developed with this purpose in mind to protect marine structures where corrosion is a major problem in splash zones, inter-tidal and subsea environments and the difficult area where the jetty pile meets the jetty platform. These areas are extremely vulnerable due to the constantly changing mixture of air, temperature and chloride laden water; all of which are the perfect mixture for severe corrosion. The result of this will cause structures to become unsafe over time and extremely costly to repair. SeaShield Systems now have a 40 year proven track record, providing totally effective protection for steel, wood and concrete jetty piles in highly corrosive environments. This long term protection is achievable irrespective of cylindrical, hexagonal or square structure pile designs. Originally established in 1883, we are well known for the reliability, efficiency and longevity of our products and have built an enviable reputation based on problem solving for our customers. Apart from the UK, we also have subsidiaries in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa as well as a global network of over 70 agents making the products available virtually anywhere in the world.

Densoclad Tape, which is used for the corrosion prevention of buried or immersed pipes and fittings is already one of the company's most durable products. The optimum application of Densoclad includes a 55% overlap of the tape. For ease and correct application, Densoclad now features the product name and details, which are printed on the tape as a guide for a 55% overlap (see image). Not only will this speed up application, accuracy and reduce wastage, it will also allow customers to identify in the future which Denso product they have originally applied.
Densoclad Tape can be applied cold; it is compatible with common pipe coatings and has excellent adhesion to the pipe and to itself. Densoclad Tape has outstanding resistance to cathodic disbonding and is available in standard and HT (High Temperature) grades for tropical climates. Densoclad Tape comes in 40, 50 and 70 grades (thickness) for a choice of protection options. |

1960 - 2010, 50 Years of Jointing Precast Concrete Units with Tokstrip

After celebrating 80 Years of Pipeline and steelwork protection in 2009, we are pleased to continue with another milestone product - Tokstrip, the market leading box culvert, manhole and ring chamber sealant. This year marks 50 years of service to the building industry.
Launched in 1960, at the leading edge technology then, as it still is today. Tokstrip is a rubber bitumen compound with a built in tree root inhibitor which solves the old problem of sealing precast concrete sections, which prior to this was messy, time consuming and prone to leaking.
Tokstrip solved these problems by offering a strong flexible waterproof and long lasting seal and was readily accepted, being specified and utilised by all areas of the market from the concrete pipe manufacturers civil engineers and drainage contractors through to house builders - and it is still going strong today.
Still the brand leader today, Tokstrip is the one asked for and specified by name. It offers the same reliable performance after 50 years and is continually updated to meet the different demands and specifications of its customers.

1929 - 2009, 80 Years of Pipeline & Steelwork Protection

2009 marks the 80th Anniversary of Denso Petrolatum Tapes being used around the world and continues the long success story that shows no signs of ending.
When Denso Tape was launched in the UK in 1929, the extensive market potential was underestimated for this permanently flexible tape wrap coating, which still today provides the most effective solution for long-term corrosion prevention when applied over minimally prepared steel surfaces.
The tape provides a controlled thickness over all pipe and steelwork profiles and is normally used in conjunction with a primer and mastic for profiling awkward shapes such as pipe couplings or back-to-back steelwork angles in highly corrosive environments.
This petrolatum based system can also be applied to damp surfaces and even underwater due to moisture displacing properties. A selection of plastic or liquid applied outer Armourings provide different degrees of mechanical protection to suit most pipeline, steelwork or marine jetty pile projects.
Simple yet devastatingly effective with no better cost-effective way available for protecting valuable steel assets, we are confident the Denso Petrolatum Tape Systems will continue to play an important role in the never ending fight against corrosion for many years to come.

We are extremely proud to announce that Winn & Coales International Ltd remain an independent company and are celebrating ‘125 years Service to Industry’ in 2008.
To commemorate the occasion the company have produced a special historical 2008 calendar and will be holding several conferences and gala dinners during the year, inviting key staff and customers from around the world to attend.
The company, founded in London by Paul Winn in 1883, began its life by importing and exporting commodities such as starch, sugar and coke but started to specialise in anti-corrosion and sealing waxes at the turn of the century. Petrolatum tapes and mastics were introduced in 1929.
During the following years the company expanded rapidly, increasing and selling their product range not only in the UK but globally and setting up subsidiaries in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. With the additional support of a substantial network of dedicated agents around world, the products were made available, virtually anywhere.
Notable events are as follows. In 1946 when Paul Winn died, Frank Coales was appointed Chairman. In 1957 the company launched its ‘Sylglas’ range of DIY water and weatherproofing products in the UK, reaping benefits gained from years of experience dealing with sealing solutions. In 1960 ‘Tokstrip’ was introduced for jointing precast concrete units and rapidly became the brand leader in this market. In 1965 David Winn joined the company and was appointed Chairman in 1991, only the third Chairman since it all began in 1883. He remains Chairman today.
The success of Denso and Sylglas products, was and still is, based on effective, long-lasting, solutions to customers problems and using the latest technology the company has continued to develop novel systems such as Archco-Rigidon’, ‘SeaShield’ and ‘Steelcoat’ to satisfy their demands. |
