1929 - 2009, 80 Years of Pipeline & Steelwork Protection

This year marks the 80th Anniversary of Denso Petrolatum Tapes being used around the world and continues the long success story that shows no signs of ending.

When Denso Tape was launched in the UK in 1929, the extensive market potential was underestimated for this permanently flexible tape wrap coating, which still today provides the most effective solution for long-term corrosion prevention when applied over minimally prepared steel surfaces.

The tape provides a controlled thickness over all pipe and steelwork profiles and is normally used in conjunction with a primer and mastic for profiling awkward shapes such as pipe couplings or back-to-back steelwork angles in highly corrosive environments.

This petrolatum based system can also be applied to damp surfaces and even underwater due to moisture displacing properties. A selection of plastic or liquid applied outer armorings provide different degrees of mechanical protection to suit most pipeline, steelwork or marine jetty pile projects.

Simple yet devastatingly effective with no better cost-effective way available for protecting valuable steel assets, we are confident the Denso Petrolatum Tape Systems will continue to play an important role in the never ending fight against corrosion for many years to come.

Denso HI-Tack Protects Sweating Ammonia TanksDENSO HI-TACK PROTECTS SWEATING AMMONIA TANKS

Denso Hi-Tack Tape was chosen to protect two large ammonia tanks (10ft tall x 40ft long) in a public service facility at Bastrop, Texas. It is one of several utilities provided by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) in Texas, including electricity and water supplies, water and wastewater utilities, flood management and public parks. Protecting the ammonia tanks had been a continual battle due to constant sweating. After a long period of painting the tanks every three to five tears, the LCRA engineers selected the Denso Hi-Tack Tape coating to give long-term corrosion protection. It was supplied by Denso North america Inc - USA, of Houston, Texas, a subsidiary of Winn & Coales International Ltd.

The scope of the work included hand tool cleaning the surface, application of a thin layer of Denso Hi-Tack primer and a double layer of Denso Hi-Tack Tape to the tanks and steel support columns. The total surface area protected was approximately 3, 100 Sq. Ft. Click here fore more information on Denso Hi Tack Tape/Denso Steelcoat 100 System

Seasheld protection on new Clyde berthing structuresSEASHELD PROTECTION ON NEW CLYDE BERTHING STRUCTURES

SeaShield 2000FD System was specified by consultants Arch Henderson LLP to give additional protection to a number of legs on the new berthing structures constructed by George Leslie Ltd for Western Ferries (Clyde) Ltd at McInroy's point, Gourock and at Hunter's Quay, Dunoon. The scheme is part of an upgrade by Western Ferries to the vessel loading facilities at their terminal sites on the Firth of Clyde.

The berthing structures interface the vessels with floating linkspans that move up and down with the tide, thereby facilitating traffic movement on and off the ferries. The construction and assembly of the tubular pile legs resulted in exposed areas within the tidal zone that did not receive adequate protective coating. The SeaShield System was specified by Arch Henderson to overcome this problem.

SeaShield 2000FD was installed by Clyde Commercial Diving Ltd, beginning with application of Denso Paste S105, Denso Marine Piling Tape and then the HDPE Jackets which were put into position with stainless steel fixings. Denso Marine piling tape, a cold applied petrolatum-based tape for application under water, is the primary anti-corrosion protection in the SeaShield System with a proven 35- year track record. The Jackets will also give abrasion protection for the Tape system. Click here for more information on SeaShield 2000FD System.

Denso Ultraseal Tape aids Forth Road Bridge dehumidification systemDENSO ULTRASEAL AIDS FORTH ROAD BRIDGE DEHUMIDIFICATION SYSTEM

As part of a £7.8m project to install a dehumidication system to protect the main cables from corroding on the Forth Road Bridge, contractors C. Spencer Ltd are applying Denso Tape and Denso Ultraseal AL Tape to protect the hanger cables at the cable bands. The work is not expected to be completed until early next year.

Dehumidification systems have previously been installed as a preventative measure against moisture forming inside the main cables on a new bridge in Japan and on the new Oresund bridge that connects Sweden and Denmark. In its first use in Britain on the Forth Road Bridge is to dry out the inner surfaces of the wire strands that make up the main cable (this made up of 11,618 separate strands), thus removing one of the requirements for corrosion to take place. The consulting engineers for this innovative project are Faber Maunsell, who expect a long protective life for the system.

Denso Ultraseal AL Tape is a cold applied self-adhesive tape with a weather und ultra violet resistant aluminium backing. It was specifically developed for the long term protection of above ground pipework and structural steel. Its composition is a high melting point polymer bitumen adhesive to a 40 micron aluminum/polyester laminate with grey weatherproof lacquer finnish. Historic crane protected with Denso paste and Petrolatum TapeDENSO PROTECTION FOR HISTORIC CRANE

A key feature of the Llechwedd Exchange Sidings industrial archaeological site on the A470 Improvement scheme near Blaenau Ffestiniog is a crane that first saw service in the late 1800s loading slate from the nearby quarries on to railway trucks. The site, which is designated as an area of Special Archaeological Importance has been the subject of a design and build scheme, with Giffords being the designer for the original contractors, Alfred McAlpine, who are now part of Carillion Plc.

Giffords designed a foundation for the original pillar of the Llechwedd crane to go in its new location. The pillar is the original 500mm diameter casting, which has been protected from corrosion with Winn & Coales Denso Paste, followed by Denso Tape, before being sunk 2.5 metres into the ground. Denso Tape is a non-woven synthetic fibre fabric impregnated and coated with an adhesive compound based on Petrolatum.

In its former days the crane would load the slate that came down from the quarries on narrow quarry wagons to standard gauge rail wagons. Those going north to Llandudno would go through a one and a half miles tunnel, which was then the longest in Britain. Another rail line would take the slate down to Portmadog. Densoclad 70 chosen for 23km pipe wrapping contract on pipeline lengths in the Cheshire brine fieldsDENSOCLAD 70 CHOSEN FOR 23km PIPE WRAPPING CONTRACT

Densoclad 70 and 70S were chosen for the complete protection of some 23km of pipeline lengths in a major wrapping contract just completed by Barrier Limited at wallsend, Tyne & Wear. The pipe lengths, ranging in diameter from 50mm to 500mm, are destined for use in the Cheshire brine fields.

The larger diameter pipes were wrapped on a motorised rolling specifically designed for fast throughput using Densoclad 70S with rolls of 225mm wide x 60m long tape. Densoclad 70S was used here because is has a stiffer PVC backing to enable it to withstand the greater tension exerted by the motorised rolling rig. The 50mm diameter pipes were also wrapped on a motorised rig, but Densoclad 70, 100mm wide x 60m long was used here. Barrier Ltd reports that customer delivery targets were not only matched but exceeded for each pipe size.

Winn & Coales' Densoclad 70S heavy-duty tape is designed for corrosion prevention of large diameter pipes, welded joints, bends and fittings. The extremely tough PVC backing combined with polymer bitumen adhesive ensures complete protection and exceptional resistance to damage by impact, poor backfill or aggressive ground conditions. Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd 1883 - 2008 celebrating serving 125 years service to industryWinn & Coales International Ltd - Celebrating 125 Years Service to Industry in 2008

We are extremely proud to announce that Winn & Coales International Ltd remain an independent company and are celebrating ‘125 years Service to Industry’ in 2008.

To commemorate the occasion the company have produced a special historical 2008 calendar and will be holding several conferences and gala dinners during the year, inviting key staff and customers from around the world to attend.

The company, founded in London by Paul Winn in 1883, began its life by importing and exporting commodities such as starch, sugar and coke but started to specialise in anti-corrosion and sealing waxes at the turn of the century. Petrolatum tapes and mastics were introduced in 1929.

During the following years the company expanded rapidly, increasing and selling their product range not only in the UK but globally and setting up subsidiaries in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. With the additional support of a substantial network of dedicated agents around world, the products were made available, virtually anywhere.

Notable events are as follows. In 1946 when Paul Winn died, Frank Coales was appointed Chairman. In 1957 the company launched its ‘Sylglas’ range of DIY water and weatherproofing products in the UK, reaping benefits gained from years of experience dealing with sealing solutions. In 1960 ‘Tokstrip’ was introduced for jointing precast concrete units and rapidly became the brand leader in this market. In 1965 David Winn joined the company and was appointed Chairman in 1991, only the third Chairman since it all began in 1883. He remains Chairman today.

The success of Denso and Sylglas products, was and still is, based on effective, long-lasting, solutions to customers problems and using the latest technology the company has continued to develop novel systems such as Archco-Rigidon’, ‘SeaShield’ and ‘Steelcoat’ to satisfy their demands.
